Our Parish Council shares with the Parish Team the responsibility for promoting, encouraging and enhancing the spiritual and community life of our joint parishes.
The Parish Council currently consists of 18 members, of whom 15 are taken from Brentwood and 3 from Warley. Meetings are held at least 3 times a year, and councillors normally serve for a period of three years.
Members seek to support and advance parish activities by making themselves aware of the individual needs of the two parish communities. In addition, Parish Meetings, at which all parishioners are welcome, are held annually both at the Cathedral and at Holy Cross.
Although each councillor brings to the Parish Council a different perspective of the meaning of ‘Church’, they are nevertheless keen to hear and reflect your opinions. If you would like something to be considered, please speak either to one of the Parish Team or contact the Chairman of the Parish Council.
At the Cathedral our Master of Music, Andrew Wright, assisted by a team of musicians is responsible for a wealth of music for all the liturgies.
Music at the 9:30 am Family Mass is led by the Cathedral Music Group, whereas at the 11:30 am Choral Mass one of the Cathedral Choirs performs. On the first Sunday of the month at the 6:30 pm Mass (Youth Mass) music is led by the Maranatha Music Group.
A performance of Choral Vespers is held by the Cathedral Choirs both on the third Sunday of each month at 5:00 pm, and during term time on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 pm.
If you would like more information about music at the Cathedral or about joining any of the choirs, please contact the Music Secretary on 01277 265288. More details can be found on the Cathedral Music Website at www.brentwood-music.org.uk .
We are very fortunate in having a dedicated team of altar servers at the Cathedral who serve at all of the Masses.
In order to become a server, boys and girls need to have made their First Holy Communion.
The Children’s Liturgy Group is held during the 9:30 am Family Mass at the Cathedral. During the first part of the Mass, children aged 3 years and above, who have yet to make their First Communion, are invited to go to the Parish Hall, where a group of volunteers organise informal readings followed by appropriate play activities. The children are then led back to the Cathedral for the final part of the Mass.
On the second Sunday of the Month the 9:30 am Mass is a Children’s Mass with readings and music designed specifically for children.
Readers are lay men and women who proclaim the Word of God, during the Mass.
Ushers welcome those attending the Mass, and are responsible for organising the offertory collection as well as taking care of any special needs.
At the Cathedral and at Holy Cross we have a number of volunteers who provide the floral decorations both for the Sunday Masses and for weddings.
The Repository in the Cathedral stocks a wide range of cards, books and gifts and is open after the Sunday morning Masses.
